A note has two bodies. The switch in the editor's title bar chooses which one you are looking at, and they never mix: typing in the document does not touch the note, and typing in the note does not appear in the document. They are two documents that travel together on one block.

Why two bodies rather than two views

Because the alternative was worse. An earlier version rendered one body two ways and it was confusing for a reason that took a while to name: which way you were looking at it was a fact you had to remember, not one the document told you. Two bodies means the scratchpad where you worked something out can stay messy while the version you send is clean, without either being a copy of the other that drifts.

The page

Paper is A4, fixed. Margins, a running header, a running footer, page numbers and a watermark all live in Page setup, which shows a diagram of the page as you change it rather than four numbers you have to imagine.

• Contents builds a table of contents from your headings, inserted as ordinary text you can then edit. It does not silently rewrite itself.
• Page break starts a new page. In a document, a horizontal rule is a page break — a word processor has page breaks constantly and rules almost never.
• Print goes through the system dialog, which is also how you get a PDF.

The honest limit

Pages are laid out by the print engine, not simulated live as you type. The editor shows one A4-wide column with the real margins and your page breaks; printing produces correctly paginated pages with the headers and numbers on them. Live reflow across page boundaries is the one part that genuinely needs a different document model, and Umbra does not have it.

Word documents

Drop a .docx on the canvas and Umbra asks whether to keep it as a file or open it in the editor. Opening it converts the document and does not keep the original — Umbra cannot write Word files, so that exact file will only exist where you dropped it from. The dialog says so before you choose.
