The AI CLI bridge

Umbra drives the coding agent you already pay for. It never sees a prompt.

"VS Code, but you never write code — you describe the work and it gets done." The AI in Umbra is not a feature we resell. It is the command-line agent already installed on your machine, driven locally.

Supported agents

Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor and opencode work out of the box, and umbra add-agent registers any other CLI that speaks the same shape.

How it works

  • Press ⌘J for the assistant panel, or use Create with AI on the home screen.
  • Umbra runs a small bridge on 127.0.0.1 with an OS-assigned port. It is off by default; enabling it writes a 0600 file holding the port and a token.
  • One agent task is one transaction, and therefore one undo entry. ⌘Z cancels a running task, and rollback is selective, so a teammate's concurrent edits survive.
  • An external process must never write the state file while the app is open. The CLI refuses to, and routes through the bridge instead.

What we never do

We never proxy a prompt, never see a token, and never mark up an API call. This is also why the price can be what it is: there is no per-seat AI cost to pass on.

Voice

Voice notes are recorded to a real file and attached to the canvas. They are deliberately not transcribed — that is a permanent property of the app, not a gap waiting to be filled.
