How to install on macOS

    Open the download: Double-click the downloaded Umbra_0.5.11_arm64.pkg file in your Downloads folder.

    Gatekeeper Warning: macOS will show a prompt saying “Umbra can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software” because the app is not signed yet.

    Click “Done” — Do NOT click “Move to Bin”!

    When the dialog appears, click Done (or Cancel). Do NOT click “Move to Bin” or “Move to Trash”, as that will delete the installer!

    Authorize in System Settings:

    Open System Settings (Apple menu  at the top left → System Settings)

    → Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar

    → Scroll down to the Security section

    → Look for: “Umbra” was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer.

    → Click the Open Anyway button. (Enter your Mac password or Touch ID if prompted).

    Confirm and Install: A final confirmation pop-up will ask: “Are you sure you want to open it?” Click Open, then complete the standard guided installer. Umbra will install into your Applications folder. (You only have to do this once).

How to install on Windows

    Run the installer: Double-click the downloaded Umbra_0.5.11_x64-setup.exe file in your Downloads folder.

    Microsoft Defender SmartScreen Warning: Windows will show a blue screen saying “Windows protected your PC — Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting.”

    How to bypass the SmartScreen warning:

    By default, Windows only shows a prominent “Don't run” button. Click the small underlined link labeled More info located directly under the warning text.

    Click “Run anyway”: Clicking “More info” reveals a second button in the bottom-right corner. Click Run anyway. The setup wizard will launch and install Umbra onto your desktop and Start menu. (You only have to do this once).

Why does my computer warn me about this?

Because Umbra is not code-signed yet. A signing certificate costs hundreds of euros a year from Apple and Microsoft, and Umbra is free to use. These certificates will be funded out of our Collaboration subscriptions as customers join. For now, both operating systems treat Umbra the same way they treat any software from an independent developer who has not yet purchased a corporate certificate.

These warnings say nothing about whether the application is safe — only that nobody has paid to vouch for it yet. Umbra is completely offline-first, your boards never leave your disk, and once code signing is in place, the app will update itself seamlessly without prompts.

Umbra updates itself only when you ask it to — nothing is checked in the background and nothing is downloaded without your permission.
